Refracting Telescope Kit

This refracting telescope kit provides a hands-on way to explore astronomical observation and introduce the basic principles of refracting telescopes in your classroom or lab.
Modeled after Galileo’s original design, this simple refracting telescope demonstrates how early astronomers magnified distant objects and laid the groundwork for modern instruments. The telescope consists of a plano-convex objective lens, a small convex eyepiece lens, and two sliding 11-¾ in cardboard
tubes that allow students to investigate image formation and magnification. Extending or retracting the tubes brings objects at different distances into focus, making it easy to see how
lens spacing affects image clarity. The unit comes assembled for immediate use and can be quickly taken apart so students can examine each individual component. Because the telescope uses two convex lenses, images appear inverted, and the optical system provides an approximate magnification of 16X.
The kit integrates easily into optics or astronomy units focused on lenses, image inversion, and the historical development of telescopes. Includes an assembly and activity guide.

  • Build and explore a simple Galilean-style refracting telescope
  • Investigate inverted images formed by a two-lens optical system
  • Two sliding 11 ¾” cardboard tubes for focusing at different distances
  • Supplied assembled; components can be disassembled for closer examination
  • Approximate magnification of 16X for clear viewing of distant objects
  • Assembly and activity guide included for easy classroom implementation
