The spring-loaded terminals allow for a variety of spectrum tube length to used, but works best with 27 cm. The recessed contacts provide a layer of safety keeping the sockets away from accidental electrical contact. The heavy metal design keeps the device steady when in use. The black finish helps absorb ambient light that could interfere with the observed spectrums.
